The 1846 Oregon Treaty set up the present southern border of the region, although lands as far south as California are joined to its history. BC is bordered on the east by the district of Alberta, on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the northwest by the State of Alaska, and on the north by the Norwest Territories and the Yukon. On the south the county is surrounded by the American regions of Montana, Idaho, and Washington.
BC's Pacific coastline is more than 27,000 kilometers (17,000 mi) long. The shoreline features mountainous fjords and approximately 6,000 largely-uninhabited islets. The entire land area of the county is 944,735 sq. km (364,800 sq mi). Vancouver is BC's principal city by population. Vancouver is situated in the southwest corner of the mainland, remarked as the Lower Mainland. Victoria is British Columbia's capital city, situated on southeastern Vancouver Island.

The inland conditions are less mild because of the distance from the Pacific Ocean. Short but cold winters with intense but infrequent snowfalls are common in a number of Southern Interior valleys. In the the southern part of the Central Interior, the Cariboo, latitude and altitude create colder winters, but the depth and length of the chilly season is mostly lower than at comparable latitudes elsewhere in Canada. The northern two-thirds of the region are principally mountainous and include fewer individuals and fewer development. The omission is the Peace River District, east of the Rockies. This area situated in the province's northeast forms part of the Canadian Prairies.
